All About The New M-8 Cars

The Connecticut Department of Transportation and Metro North Railroad have been working with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., to finalize designs and begin engineering of a new fleet of New Haven Rail Line cars. This new generation of M-8 electric rail cars are replacing the existing M-2 fleet of cars, originally procured in the early 1970s.

With the help of commuter focus groups, a number of design upgrades have been incorporated into the new M-8 Cars, including:

Gov. Malloy: New M-8 Rail Cars Will Improve Service, Safety and Reliability on the New Haven Line Delivery Of 405 New Rail Cars Ordered To Be Complete By The End Of 2014 (September 10, 2014) Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced today that Connecticut is close to receiving all of the 405 Kawasaki M-8 rail cars that were ordered to replace the entire New Haven Line fleet which is well beyond its useful lifespan.

Governor Malloy Continues Investment in Rail Through Purchase of 25 Additional M-8 Cars for New Haven Line (July 19, 2011) Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced plans to purchase 25 more M-8 rail cars – adding to the 380 already on order – for use on the New Haven Line along the southwestern Connecticut coastline, often cited as the busiest in the nation with 120,000 riders a day between New Haven and New York City.
