All About The New M-8 Cars

The Connecticut Department of Transportation and Metro North Railroad have been working with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., to finalize designs and begin engineering of a new fleet of New Haven Rail Line cars. This new generation of M-8 electric rail cars are replacing the existing M-2 fleet of cars, originally procured in the early 1970s.

With the help of commuter focus groups, a number of design upgrades have been incorporated into the new M-8 Cars, including:

* Easier entrance and exit visibility

* Larger windows | High-back seats | Individual head rests

* Convenient electrical outlets by seats

* Automated announcements

Malloy, joined by Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James Redeker and other state and local officials, led a tour of the New Haven Rail Yard, which is undergoing a $1.15 billion, multi-year upgrade and expansion.

Bicycle advocates were invited and encouraged to bring bikes to the event and try out the racks for themselves.

Governor Malloy Continues Investment in Rail Through Purchase of 25 Additional M-8 Cars for New Haven Line (July 19, 2011) Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced plans to purchase 25 more M-8 rail cars – adding to the 380 already on order – for use on the New Haven Line along the southwestern Connecticut coastline, often cited as the busiest in the nation with 120,000 riders a day between New Haven and New York City.
